Description
Asomiya Gamcha is a traditional hand-woven towel, also known as "Bihu gamusa", that is commonly used in Assam, a state in Northeast India. It is an integral part of the culture and daily life of the Assamese people.
Origin and History:
The word "gamcha" is derived from the Sanskrit word "gamyati" which means to wipe. It is believed that the gamcha was introduced to Assam by the Ahom rulers in the 13th century. Originally, it was made from cotton and used as a headgear by the farmers to protect themselves from the scorching sun and sweat while working in the fields. Over time, it evolved into a multi-functional cloth and became an important part of Assamese culture.
Design and Patterns:
Asomiya Gamcha usually comes in a rectangular shape with a length of 3 to 4 feet and a width of 2 to 3 feet.
