Description
Assamese handloom PAT Mekhela Sadar is a traditional attire worn by women in the Indian state of Assam. It is a two-piece clothing made from hand-woven silk or cotton fabric, consisting of a skirt and a wrap-around shawl. The word "PAT" means silk in Assamese, while "Mekhela Sadar" refers to the skirt and shawl. The origin of this attire can be traced back to the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam from the 13th to the 19th century. During this time, silk weaving was a major industry in the state, and the royal courts patronized the art of handloom weaving. The PAT Mekhela Sadar was initially worn by women of the royal family and later became popular among the common people. The fabric used to make the PAT Mekhela Sadar is mostly silk, which is locally known as "Muga" or "golden silk".
