Description
The Assamese traditional rumaal is a hand-embroidered piece of cloth that is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Assam. It is a rectangular or square-shaped cloth that is used as a head covering or to cover one's face while traveling or working outdoors. The word 'rumaal' is derived from the Persian word 'roomal', which means handkerchief. The Assamese rumaal is believed to have originated from the Mughal era when it was used by the Mughal rulers as a symbol of royalty and wealth. However, over time, it became an essential part of the Assamese traditional attire, especially for women. The rumaal is usually made of cotton or silk fabric, with intricate embroidery done by hand. The embroidery is done on the entire cloth, from the edges to the center, using vibrant colored threads.
