Description
Black handloom Kantha stitch saree from Bengal is a traditional saree that is handcrafted with intricate embroidery using the Kantha stitch technique. This saree is popularly known as the "Kantha saree" and is a speciality of Bengal, particularly the villages of Bolpur, Shantiniketan and Murshidabad. The Kantha stitch is a type of embroidery that originated in West Bengal and is believed to be more than 500 years old. It is done by hand using coloured threads to create beautiful motifs and designs on the saree. The word "Kantha" means "throat" in Sanskrit, and the name is derived from the way the needle passes through the fabric. The fabric used in making a Kantha stitch saree is usually cotton or silk, which is handwoven on a traditional handloom. The saree is then washed and starched to give it a stiff and smooth finish.
