Muga silk, also known as “golden silk” is a special type of silk produced exclusively in the state of Assam, India. The sarees made from this silk are highly sought after for their unique texture, luster, and durability. Origin and production: The Muga silk sarees have a long history in the Indian culture, dating back to ancient times. It is believed that the silk was first discovered and cultivated in Assam by the Ahom dynasty rulers around the 13th century. The silk is produced by a special species of silkworm called Antheraea assamensis, which is endemic to Assam. The process of producing Muga silk is labor-intensive and involves multiple steps. The silkworms feed on leaves of the Som and Sualu trees and produce a unique golden-colored cocoon.
