Description
Bells of Ireland, also known as Moluccella laevis, are unique and striking annual plants that are native to Turkey, Syria, and the Caucasus region. They are a member of the mint family and are closely related to herbs like basil and thyme.
These plants are characterized by their tall, upright stems that can reach up to 3 feet in height. The stems are covered with small, white, bell-shaped flowers that are surrounded by bright green, leaf-like structures called calyces. These calyces give the plants their unique appearance, resembling tiny green bells or lanterns, hence the name "Bells of Ireland. "
Bells of Ireland are popular garden plants due to their show-stopping appearance and ease of cultivation. They are typically grown from seeds, which can be sown directly in the garden in early spring or started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. They prefer a sunny location with well-draining soil.
