Dhakai Jamdani sarees are traditional handloom sarees that originated in Dhaka, which is now the capital of Bangladesh. However, these sarees are now also produced in the state of West Bengal, India, and are known as Bengal Jamdani sarees. The word “Jamdani” is derived from the Persian word “Jam” meaning flower and “Dani” meaning vase. These sarees are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, intricate designs, and fine quality of fabric. The process of making a Dhakai Jamdani saree is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, involving skilled weavers who have mastered the art of weaving these beautiful sarees. The fabric used in these sarees is usually cotton, but silk and other blended fabrics are also used. The cotton used in these sarees is known as “Dhakai muslin”, which is a fine, lightweight cotton that is perfect for the hot and humid climate of Bengal.
